Hello! my name is Gertie Linklater. I was born and raised in Moosonee. I am a Fort Albany First Nations member; however I have never lived on reserve.

I am one of 11 children: 7 brothers and 3 sisters. Both my parents are now deceased along with three of my oldest brothers. I attended Residential School at Bishop Hordan hall in Moose Factory and was there for three years along with six other siblings.

I left Moosonee in 1991 and relocated to North Bay for 25 years and decided to go back to school. I attended 5 different treatment centres and I can proudly say I have been sober for 29 years. While I was living in North bay, I also attended post-secondary school and obtained certificates in General Arts, Science, and Native Drug & Alcohol Counselor and I obtained Diplomas in Indigenous Wellness and Addictions Prevention and Social Service Worker.

Once my children were old enough to get out on their own, I decided to return to Moosonee as I wanted to give back to the James Bay communities. I am glad to say I have had the opportunity to work in all the James bay communities since my return to the area. My employment since returning has been with WAHA 2014-2020 as an Addictions Counselor and Regional Concurrent Disorder Worker. Payukotayno 2009-2014 as a Child Intervention Worker, Community Care Worker and in the Parenting Program.

In my leisure time, I enjoy attending sweats, meditating and walking. I am also a people person and enjoy talking to anyone and everyone.
